Dear friends
About 20 years ago I longed to be a professional artist of sorts, I went to both art school and drama school and tried to find ways to fuse these worlds together. I worked on and in shows, I taught theatre and made a cabaret show but I realised that I didn’t really want to constantly hustle for my creativity. That the ultimate stage and canvas was life, that all we do can be an art. Art isn’t something that needs a huge audience, it isn’t a performance but a way of living - it can be done in our homes and lives, in what we wear and how we interact with the everyday.
“I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.” - Helena Bonham Carter
Alongside art and theatre I have always been fascinated by working with movement and the body. Over the last 20 or so years I have attended many forms of movement and dance classes. In 2011 I became a yoga teacher and during that time created events, happenings and also offered many online and in-person workshops. In 2018 I took an extended maternity break from teaching yoga and began a BA in art history and creative writing (which I’m yet to finish), and started to practice and study Pilates more.
Artful Movement is a practice that is underpinned by the philosophy that we are all artists, we are all the curators of our life, that we can all dance/move/express through our bodies.
It encompasses: movement and stillness practices drawing from yoga & Pilates, creative prompts for journalling or making stuff, breath-work or sometimes a shake-around dance in your living room. These practices are for anyone who gets a bit bored of the same movement/exercise/life routines and craves some more creativity in them as well as ways to find centre, replenish and revitalise.
